Namur Archaeological Society
The Société archéologique de Namur (SAN) was founded in 1845. It is the fourth learned society to be created in Belgium after Mons (1835), Bruges (1839) and Tournai (1845). It is dedicated to the preservation, study and dissemination of the heritage of Namur.
The SAN aims to “research, preserve and acquire heritage objects; publish documents and scientific and popular studies; set up and manage a library; promote and disseminate scientific research through exhibitions and publications”, overseen by a Board of Directors.
Promoted to Royal Society in 1994, the SAN is active in the management of Namur museums (Archaeological Museum, TreM.a and Museum of Decorative Arts-Hôtel de Groesbeeck-de Croix), in the design of temporary exhibitions and in the publication of scientific and popular works. The SAN has a mediation service to develop its activities for the public, and regularly organizes conferences and symposia as well as excursions and cultural trips.
